Nokia Moonraker is a smartwatch Microsoft killed, in favour of the Microsoft Band.
A Nokia smartwatch, called Moonraker, has been leaked online. The device was apparently planned for launch alongside the Lumia 930 smartphone, back in 2014. The device was reportedly cancelled after Microsoft acquired Nokia and decided to make the Microsoft Band instead. Images of the Moonraker smartwatch had been leaked online earlier as well, but this new leak brings a video presentation of the device.
The YouTube video shows a swipe-based UI, along with a power on/off button, which also grants access to some other features. The watch has a rubber strap and a square dial. You can also see the NFC logo on the back, which suggest that the watch was meant to be NFC capable. The NFC logo rests right below the magnetic charging pins, which are also behind the dial. The dial itself is square, similar to the Sony Smartwatch that launched around that time.
While the watch will certainly not come to market ever, it still makes for an interesting watch. Nokia was evidently trying everything others were, and had the same idea about the wearable market as its competitors. Would this watch have worked? Well, given the fate of most smartwatches, we would think not.
In addition, the Nokia Moonraker looks quite basic and pedestrian, to be honest. It is unlikely that this smartwatch would have really caught the consumer eye, even with Nokia’s branding.
