Apple said it achieved its highest-ever December-quarter revenue in India, driven by rising demand from first-time buyers. Sales of iPhone, Mac and iPad all touched record levels in the country during the quarter. Apple chief executive Tim Cook said the company also recorded an all-time high in services revenue in India.

“We did set a quarterly revenue record during December,” Cook said, adding that the company also recorded “quarterly revenue records on iPhone and Mac and iPad, and an all-time revenue record on services” in India.

According to Cook, much of Apple’s growth in India is coming from new customers entering its ecosystem for the first time. “The majority of customers that are buying iPhones and Mac and iPad and Watch are all new to that product,” he said.

Cook described India as a major long-term opportunity for Apple. He noted that India is “the second-largest smartphone market in the world” and “the fourth-largest PC market,” while Apple’s current market share in the country remains “modest.” “So we think there is a huge opportunity for us there,” he added.

Apple’s chief financial officer Kevan Parekh said the company also saw strong growth in its installed base in India. “We are seeing strong double-digit growth in the installed base in India as well, which is really encouraging,” Parekh said. Executives noted that a larger installed base is helping boost both device sales and services usage.

Cook said Apple opened its fifth retail store in the country during December and plans to open another store in Mumbai. Apple added that its global retail business delivered its best results ever during the quarter, with India playing an important role in that performance.

While Apple does not share country-specific revenue numbers, executives said India showed strong growth across both hardware and services, making it one of the company’s most promising markets.
