Galaxy Z Fold 8 user recreates viral iPhone Duo unfolding animation, claims Samsung already has the hardware

Apple recently unveiled its first foldable iPhone in India and global markets at its Surprise and Shine event. During the keynote, when the iPhone Duo was unfolded, a smooth animation appeared across its screens, which quickly grabbed everyone’s attention. Following that, many users also started comparing it with the newly launched Galaxy Z Fold 8, which currently lacks support for such animation. However, a Reddit user has now claimed that he recreated a similar effect on his Galaxy Z Fold 8. He further suggested that Samsung may already have the hardware needed to bring a similar feature to its foldable phone.

A Reddit user with the username moomanjohnny recently shared a post on the platform claiming that he recreated Apple’s viral iPhone Duo unfolding animation on the Galaxy Z Fold 8. The user also attached a video showing a similar animation on his Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8.

The user further added that, ‘I felt a bit of FOMO seeing that cool iPhone Duo animation Apple showed off today, so I poked around and found that the Z Fold 8 has a really accurate hinge sensor.’

While explaining his approach, the user said that he realised it would be pretty simple to do. According to him, all he required was to ‘take the hinge sensor values and use them to drive a transition animation on both screens.’

He also claimed that Samsung has all the hardware present in its Galaxy Z Fold 8 for such animation and can give a similar experience to Samsung users with a minor software update.

Samsung’s response

Samsung has not yet officially responded to the viral claims at the time of writing. Moreover, we were also unable to independently verify whether the video shared by the Reddit user is an original recreation or an AI-generated video.

Social media reaction

The post has also attracted attention online, as many users turned to the social media platform X, sharing their reactions about how quickly the Galaxy Z Fold 8 community responded to the viral iPhone Duo animation. One user joked, ‘That was quick lol,’ while another called the developers ‘absolutely crazy’ and said the bigger takeaway was creativity, questioning why Samsung had not thought of the idea during the past eight years.

However, not everyone was impressed by the recreation, as some users pointed out that the distortion in the animation appears to be slightly off, arguing that it does not fully create the illusion of a flat panel while the phone is being unfolded.
