Meta has recently shifted its strategy. Instead of putting most of its money into the metaverse, the company is now investing more heavily in AI wearable devices. Smart glasses are a major part of that plan.

Zuckerberg compared the moment to the early days of smartphones. ‘Billions of people wear glasses or contacts for vision correction. And I think that we’re at a moment similar to when smartphones arrived, and it was clearly only a matter of time until all those flip phones became smartphones,’ Zuckerberg said. ‘It’s hard to imagine a world in several years where most glasses that people wear aren’t AI glasses.’

According to Zuckerberg, Meta’s smart glasses are already seeing strong demand. He said sales tripled over the past year and called them ‘some of the fastest growing consumer electronics in history.’

Still, his confidence should be taken carefully. Zuckerberg previously pushed the idea that people would spend much of their work and social lives in the metaverse, an idea that has not taken off as expected, reports TechCrunch.

Well, Meta is not alone in betting on AI wearables. Other major tech companies are moving in the same direction. Google is expected to release smart glasses this year. Apple is also rumoured to be working on smart glasses. Meanwhile, Snap recently announced that it would spin off its AR glasses business, Specs, into a separate company.

AI hardware interest goes beyond glasses. OpenAI is said to be exploring wearable devices like AI pins or earbuds, and Apple is rumoured to be developing an AirTag-sized AI device.
