HIGHLIGHTS

The Xiaomi Mi A3 and Mi A3 Lite could come with a fingerprint scanner under their display.

Highlights:

  • Three Xiaomi phones are currently undergoing hardware testing, says a report
  • Two of the three devices could be Android One-powered
  • The two devices, most likely the Xiaomi Mi A3 and Mi A3 Lite, could sport an in-display fingerprint scanner

Whether you’re a fan of it or not, the in-display fingerprint scanner has become a trending feature amongst many a high-end and even mid-range smartphone. Based on a fresh report from XDA Developers, we believe the Xiaomi Mi A3 (and possibly the Xiaomi Mi A3 Lite) could hide its fingerprint scanner under the display. Like the outgoing model, the Xiaomi Mi A2, the Xiaomi Mi A3 is expected to be an Android One-powered smartphone.

News of the Xiaomi Mi A3 sporting an in-display fingerprint scanner started pouring in when XDA Developers Member franztesca reported seeing three new Xiaomi devices undergo hardware tests. Of the three, whose code names are “pyxis”, “bamboo_sprout”, and “cosmos_sprout”, two have neen been identified as Android One smartphones. This is based on the theory that every Android One-powered smartphone in the past contained “sprout” in its code name. One can assume that they are the Xiaomi Mi A3 and Xiaomi Mi A3 Lite.

The report from XDA Developers goes on to say that the three Xiaomi smartphones could have a 32-megapixel selfie camera with four-in-one pixel binning technology. Sadly, there’s no other information available about the cameras of the three Xiaomis. There’s also no information yet on what will power the Xiaomi Mi A3. Given that the Xiaomi Mi A2 was powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 chipset, it’s safe to assume that Xiaomi will bump the Xiaomi Mi A3 to Qualcomm Snapdragon 675.

Xiaomi launched the Mi A2 in India in August last year. It has since been available with a 5.99-inch LTPS IPS LCD screen, an aluminium body, and a dual-camera setup (20-megapixel + 12-megapixel) on the back. The selfie shooter is a 20-megapixel sensor with an f/2.2 aperture. It ships with a 3,000mAh battery and charges using a USB Type-C port. Its RAM and storage options include: 4GB RAM + 64GB storage and 6GB RAM + 128GB storage. Part of the Android One programme, the Xiaomi Mi A2 can be upgraded to Android 9 Pie.
