Total telecom subscriber base in India grew to 1.19 billion by end of March: TRAI
There were 5.98 million new wireless subscribers in the month of March, while only 54 thousand new subscribers were added in the same period
The Indian telecom subscriber base is still on the rise. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has announced that the total telecom subscriber base in India has risen from 1.18 billion by the end of February, to 1.19 billion by then end of March. This marks a monthly growth rate of 0.51 percent. Total number of subscriptions in urban and rural areas increased to 692.97 million and 501.61 million respectively. There were 5.98 million new wireless additions during the month while only 54 thousand new wired subscribers were added in the same period. The overall tele-density in India increased to 92.98 percent while the total number of broadband subscribers was 276.52 million.
The report also notes that in March, 6.03 million subscribers submitted their requests for Mobile Number Portability (MNP). By comparison, 5.67 million subscribers had submitted their application in the month of February. The cumulative MNP requests since the start of the service stood at 272.76 million at the end of March.
TRAI’s report also noted that the market share of private access service providers had slightly decreased to 91.06 percent as compared to the 91.19 percent the previous month. The two PSUs, BSNL and MTNL had a market share of 8.94 percent. Bharti Airtel lead the way with 23.39 percent share, followed by Vodafone at 17.87 percent. Relative newcomer, Reliance Jio, had a market share of 9.29 percent.
