Telegram ban lifted but app still not working on your device? Here is what you can do
Many users in India continued to report Telegram outages on 23 June
The app remained missing from the Google Play Store and Apple App Store
Telegram's official account responded to a user's question about the ban
The temporary ban on Telegram in India was expected to lift on 22 June, the day after the NEET (UG) 2026 re-examination concluded. But going into 23 June, several users continued to report that the app was not working, with complaints ranging from undelivered messages and an inaccessible website to the app being missing entirely from the Google Play Store and Apple App Store.
SurveyThe confusion appears to stem partly from how the restriction’s timeline was worded. The original order restricted access “until 22 June,” which some users interpreted as meaning service would resume from that date, while others read it as the telegram ban remaining in effect through the full day, with restoration only beginning after 22 June ended. There is no official confirmation of an extension to the Telegram ban and the most likely explanation is that the restoration is happening in phases rather than instantly across every internet service provider.

That phased rollout appears to be playing out unevenly. One user described the situation on X: Telegram was “working for most places” on Jio, while Airtel access was “selective” depending on location. Another user asked directly why the app was not working on Airtel while functioning fine on a different network. Several others reported still being unable to access Telegram at all without using a VPN.
Telegram’s own official account weighed in on the confusion, replying to a user asking when the platform would be unbanned in India with a pointed response: “not up to me, ask your government buddy.” The remark reflects Telegram’s position throughout the episode, that the restriction is entirely a government decision rather than anything within the company’s control.
It is worth noting that the ban on broader access and a separate order requiring Telegram to disable its message-editing feature have different timelines. The Telegram message-editing ban remains in place until 30 June regardless of when general access returns, so even users who regain full access to chats and messaging should not expect to be able to edit previously sent messages until July.
What you can do if Telegram still isn’t working
If you are still facing issues, a few basic troubleshooting steps are worth trying before assuming something is permanently broken on your end:
- Force-close the app and reopen it, or restart your phone entirely
- Check for and install the latest app update from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store, since the app may have temporarily disappeared from listings during the restriction
- If the app is not visible in your app store at all, try again after some time, as availability is reportedly returning in phases by region and provider
- Switch from mobile data to Wi-Fi, or vice versa, since access has varied noticeably between networks like Jio and Airtel
- If you are on mobile data, try toggling airplane mode on and off, or manually switching data off and back on, to force your device to refresh its connection
- As a last resort, uninstall and reinstall the app completely rather than just updating it
Given how gradually the Telegram ban appears to be lifting, persistence and patience are likely to resolve the issue for most users within the next day or two, even without any of the above steps making an immediate difference.
