Users will now be able to view GIF animations on Twitter's mobile and desktop platforms.
Twitter now supports animated GIF's on its desktop, Android and iOS platforms. The GIF's will not play automatically, but users will have to press a play button accompanied with the GIF or just click on the tweet to view them.
The company made the announcement via a tweet, to demonstrate the animated GIF's:
"Starting today, you can share and view animated GIFs," Twitter wrote in a tweet on Wednesday — which was accompanied by a GIF showing a man holding a cute fluffy dog with the caption "GIFs got me like."
Twitter is also rolling out support to its API, that will allow third-party developers to offer similar support in their client applications. Several other social networks and blogging sites, like Pinterest and Tumblr, already offer support for animated GIFS. However, social networking giants Twitter and Facebook have been the exceptions. Facebook has decided not to allow GIFs on its site because it reportedly believes that they will make the News Feeds very chaotic.
Twitter had recently introduced a new feature that allows users to embed tweets within new tweets. This new feature will make tweets appear more streamlined. The functionality has been rolled out for Android and iOS devices only for now and is not available for desktop users. The micro blogging site has made no comment on whether the feature will be launched on more platforms.
Twitter has also launched hubs for tracking the FIFA World Cup 2014. Twitter has added a new sign-up form, that gives people the ability to choose their team's flag as their profile image. Users will also get access to scoreboards for each game as well as custom timelines for each individual match.
