AI is becoming more powerful every day, with companies racing to build systems that can handle more tasks without human help. But despite leading one of the world’s biggest AI companies, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman says a future where AI does everything is not the goal. In a recent blog post, Altman and OpenAI’s chief scientist Jakub Pachocki shared their thoughts on the future of AI. While they highlighted the benefits AI can bring, they also warned about the risks of relying too heavily on automation.

“Entirely automating everything is not the future we want,” the duo wrote in the post. “It would be unfulfilling, and it would be dangerous. AI should help people pursue their goals, not become untethered from them.”

Altman and Pachocki believe that human involvement will become even more important as AI advances. They said people will continue to play a key role in “setting directions, making tradeoffs, applying judgment, and bringing values, taste, care, and responsibility to the work.”

The comments come at a time when agentic AI is gaining attention across the tech industry. These AI systems are designed to perform tasks and complete workflows with little human intervention. OpenAI’s warning also follows a similar message from Anthropic, which recently raised concerns about the risks that could come with the rapid development of advanced AI systems.

The duo also revealed what it calls the “third phase” of its journey. One of the company’s main goals is to build an “automated AI researcher” that can help “accelerate and increasingly automate the research process itself.” Another key goal is to provide personal AGI to everyone.
