Netflix APK version 7.82.1 hints that the service could add a sleep timer
The sleep timer feature was discovered in the Netflix app code.
It is possible that the feature is in the works.
There is no official information on when the feature could be available.
It looks like Netflix is adding a sleep timer option to the streaming app so that the service shuts off on its own rather than playing till your device’s battery runs out. The information comes from XDA developers that has “discovered the evidence of the new feature in the latest version of Netflix, which recently rolled out on Android”. Please do remember that just because the code was discovered doesn’t mean that the feature will definitely launch.
Until now there is no way to activate a sleep timer on Netflix unless the device you are watching it on supports a sleep timer. For example, if you are watching Netflix via your Smart TV, you can set a sleep timer on the TV to turn off. But the Netflix app itself doesn’t support the feature yet. The feature would be a welcome addition for those that consume content on their smartphone or tablet while sleeping. According to XDA, “we could not find any related assets, such as layouts or images, nor could we find any related code in the Netflix 7.82.1 APK. Still, the string suggests that Netflix will add a sleep timer button to the video player UI”. It looks like currently, Netflix gives users a “are you still watching” prompt when consuming content, but it looks this prompt is quite random.
This isn’t the first time we have seen hints of a new feature in the Netflix app code. Last month it was discovered that Netflix could add an audio-only mode to its app letting users listen to content with the display off. While this would help save data, it was also ideal for those that like listening to documentaries more than watching it. Think of it as a podcast. The audio-only feature isn't live yet. You can learn more about it here.
Android users can slow down or speed up the playback of content on their devices. You can learn more about it here. If you are looking to watch Netflix for free without a subscription, you can learn how to do so here.
