Google puts song lyrics on top of search results
Google displays song lyrics in search results, with links to Google Play.
Google will now display music lyrics at the top of its search results pages when users search for “song name” plus “lyrics”. Google had been testing the feature a few months ago, but the full rollout has happened now.
Google is showing longer snippets of the lyrics with a link that points to Google Play for the “full lyrics.” When users click on “Full Lyrics on Google Play” they’ll also find a quick link to purchase the song. However there are limited songs with lyrics on the Play Store, so many popular songs whose lyrics are available on various lyrics websites aren’t showing up in the Knowledge Graph.
The internet giant is promoting its own content above search results pointing to third-party websites. The move will reduce the number of visits to music lyrics sites that now rank highly in Google Search, like songlyrics.com or azlyrics.com.
Darryl Ballantyne, CEO at LyricFind, a company that licenses lyrics to third parties like Pandora, Shazam, SoundHound among others, stated that this change will mainly affect websites that use links to drive their SEO traffic up. “However, many sites also build community around the lyrics, which Google won’t replace,” he adds. “Sites like SongMeanings and MetroLyrics are more than just SEO farms; I expect they’ll continue to post impressive traffic numbers.”
Microsoft Bing has made a similar move earlier this year, when it added a feature that also saw song lyrics returned above the search results as part of Microsoft’s efforts to compete with Google’s “Knowledge Graph.”
