Apple iPhone Air 2 may launch sooner than expected: here is what we know

Apple is preparing a second-generation iPhone Air 2 for a spring 2027 launch, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, citing people familiar with the matter. The original iPhone Air (review) launched in September 2025 and has not been one of Apple’s higher-volume models, which left open the possibility that a follow-up could be delayed well into late 2027 or skipped from the near-term roadmap altogether. Instead, Apple appears committed to bringing the iPhone Air 2 back in roughly 18 months, alongside the standard iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e.

iPhone Air 2 leaks and rumours

The current iPhone Air 2 prototypes, internally code-named V62, are reported to be in advanced testing within Apple. The most significant change is the addition of a second rear camera. The existing iPhone Air ships with a single 48MP rear camera, and according to Gurman’s sources, the limited capability of that single-lens system has been the most common customer complaint about the device. The iPhone Air 2 is expected to pair the existing main camera with an ultrawide lens, though there is no indication of a telephoto lens being added at this stage.

Apple is reportedly working to improve battery life, but it remains unclear whether this will come from a physically larger battery or from efficiency gains elsewhere in the chip and software stack. A larger battery may be difficult to accommodate given how compact the Air’s chassis is, since its thin profile was the device’s primary selling point in the first place and already required trade-offs to fit Apple’s internals.

The overall design is expected to remain largely unchanged from the current model. The iPhone Air 2 will reportedly use a version of the A20 Pro chip, the same silicon coming to this year’s iPhone 18 Pro lineup.

Apple iPhone 2026 release schedule

Apple is restructuring its iPhone release calendar starting this year. The fall 2026 lineup will consist solely of higher-end models: the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max and Apple’s first foldable iPhone. The standard iPhone 18, the iPhone 18e and the refreshed iPhone Air will then follow roughly six months later in spring 2027. Bloomberg has also reported that Apple’s 20th anniversary iPhone, featuring a curved screen design and a second-generation foldable are planned for fall 2027.

This staggered approach is intended to spread Apple’s iPhone revenue more evenly across the calendar and compete more directly with rivals like Samsung which already releases major smartphones at multiple points throughout the year. Incoming CEO John Ternus has previously said the Air plays an important role in differentiating Apple’s lineup for customers who want a portable, distinctively designed phone without needing every capability of a Pro model.
