Like the BMW 5 Series and 7 Series luxury saloons, the new fourth-generation BMW X5 employs BMW's Cluster Architecture (CLAR), a modular vehicle platform that incorporates steel, aluminium, and carbon fibre. The platform is designed to accommodate plug-in hybrid and fully electric powertrains. Despite this accommodation, the model sold in India is powered by two internal combustion engine options: a 3-litre, 6-cylinder petrol motor that churns out 265 horsepower and a 3-litre, 6-cylinder diesel motor that puts out 335 horsepower. Both engines follow a straight-six configuration and are turbocharged. They're mated to an 8-speed Steptronic gearbox.

BMW Live Cockpit listens for "Hey BMW" command from the user

On the inside is where things get interesting. The new BMW X5 gets the BMW Live Cockpit treatment, which means the dashboard is home to an upgraded infotainment system with a large "floating" touchscreen display and an all-digital instrument cluster. First unveiled at the Paris Motor Show in late 2018 and powered by BMW Operating System 7.0, the new Live Cockpit Professional on the BMW X5 supports voice and gesture-based commands. For example, saying a command like "Hey BMW, I'm cold" will make the car adjust the interior temperature accordingly.

"BMW established the Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) segment with the launch of BMW X5 in 1999. The BMW X5 has been the best-selling car in this segment for many years and has become one of our most successful models. The fourth generation embodies this model’s typical characteristics – versatility, sovereignty and luxury," commented Dr Hans-Christian Baertels, acting President of BMW Group India in a press conference. Compared to the previous model, the new BMW X5 measures an inch more in length and height and three inches more in width.
