Apple has chosen Tata Group to handle the repairs of iPhones and MacBook devices in India, further strengthening its partnership with the Indian conglomerate. According to Reuters, Tata will now be responsible for after-sales repair services in the country, taking over this role from an Indian unit of Taiwan’s Wistron.

While Apple’s authorised service centres can perform basic repairs, more complex issues with iPhones and MacBooks will now be handled by Tata. This latest move is likely a part of Apple’s broader strategy to reduce its dependence on China. For those unaware, Tata already assembles iPhones at three facilities in South India, and one of these locations also produces certain iPhone components.

India, the world’s second-largest smartphone market, is becoming increasingly important for Apple. Counterpoint Research estimates that Apple sold about 11 million iPhones in India last year, capturing a 7 percent market share—up from just 1 percent in 2020. As iPhone sales continue to grow, the demand for reliable repair services is also expected to rise.

“Tata’s deepening partnership with Apple could also pave the groundwork for Apple directly selling refurbished devices in India, like how it does in the United States currently,” Prabhu Ram, a vice president at Cybermedia Research, was quoted as saying. Meanwhile, Wistron’s ICT will continue to serve other clients in India, excluding Apple.
