iOS 26 update: These iPhones may not support Apple’s upcoming software
Apple may drop support for iPhone XS, XS Max and XR with the iOS 26 update.
iPad (7th gen) and select older Macs might also miss out on the latest software.
WWDC 2025 will kick off on June 9.
Apple is currently gearing up to host its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), which is scheduled to kick off next week. At the event, the company is expected to introduce the next generation of software updates including iOS 26, iPadOS 26 and macOS 26. However, reports suggest that not all Apple devices will be eligible for these new updates.
While Apple typically tries to keep older devices supported for as long as possible, this year could mark the end of the road for some well-known models.
iPhones that may not support iOS 26
If the reports are true, the following iPhone models may not receive the iOS 26 update:
- iPhone XS
- iPhone XS Max
- iPhone XR
It’s not surprising if Apple phases them out as newer models continue to arrive with more powerful hardware.
Well, the discontinuation of devices may not stop at iPhones. One iPad model and a few Macs are also expected to be left out this year:
iPad that may not support iPadOS 26:
- iPad (7th generation)
Macs that may miss out on macOS 26:
- 2020 MacBook Air with Intel
- 2018 MacBook Pro
- 2018 Mac mini
- 2017 iMac Pro

It’s worth noting that even if a device gets the update, it doesn’t always mean it will receive all the new features. For example, while many devices can install iOS 18, only a select few are compatible with Apple Intelligence.
