Apple is reportedly planning a different approach for its upcoming iPhone software update. Instead of introducing flashy new features, iOS 27 will likely focus on two main areas: quality improvements and AI features. This strategy mirrors what Apple did in 2009 with Mac OS X Snow Leopard. Back then, the company stepped back from adding new features and instead cleaned up the system. They removed unnecessary code, fixed bugs, and made everything run smoother and faster. Now Apple wants to do something similar with iOS 27, according to Bloomberg.

While iOS 26 brought a major visual redesign with its Liquid Glass interface, many users have experienced issues. Common complaints include phones getting too hot, batteries draining quickly, keyboard problems, connectivity issues, apps crashing, and the system feeling slow. To address these concerns, Apple’s engineering teams are said to be examining every part of the operating system. They’re looking for unnecessary code to remove, bugs to fix, and ways to improve how the software performs.
Even though the focus will be on quality, iOS 27 is still expected to bring new features, mainly powered by AI. Apple knows it is behind in the AI race and is now pushing hard to catch up. The company is reportedly working on improving Siri, integrating AI into more apps, and expanding its AI-powered web search to better compete with services like ChatGPT and Perplexity.
Planned AI features include a health-focused AI assistant that may be tied to a paid Health+ service. Inside Apple, teams are also said to be testing an internal chatbot called Veritas, which is helping shape the next version of Siri.
