While it is true that buying a mid-range phone means accepting a compromise you feel every day, it is also true that not all mid-range phones are trying to solve the same problem. That brings us to Samsung’s newest launch the Galaxy S26 FE which brings flagship-lineage hardware to a wider audience at an accessible price. Now we have heard the same story from Google and Apple, which is why we decided to pit all three options against each other. Google’s Pixel 10a is a camera-focused ‘a’ series device that bets on computational photography over hardware specs while the iPhone 17e exists because some buyers will only consider an iPhone and Apple has decided how little it is willing to give them for the privilege. Making a choice between these three phones also means living with certain compromises but the question we will try to answer is which one matches what you are actually looking for.

The iPhone 17e is the lightest and smallest of the three and has the best IP68 rating in the group at 6 metres versus 1.5 metres for the other two. The Pixel 10a is the thickest at 9mm which is a result of fitting its 5,100 mAh battery into a compact frame. The S26 FE uses glass on front and back with Gorilla Glass Victus+ while the Pixel 10a has a plastic back.

The iPhone 17e’s display is notably dimmer than the other two, rated at 800 nits under HBM conditions versus 2,000 nits on the Pixel 10a and 1,900 nits on the S26 FE. The Pixel 10a also peaks at 3,000 nits, the highest in the group, making it the best for outdoor use. The S26 FE has the largest screen at 6.7 inches and the Pixel 10a the sharpest pixel density at 422 PPI among the two Android options.

The Apple A19 is the fastest chip out of the three phones on raw performance benchmarks, consistent with Apple Silicon’s track record in single-core tasks and GPU-intensive workloads. The Exynos 2500 is a meaningful upgrade from previous generations and handles the S26 FE’s 8K video and heavy camera processing without issue. The Tensor G4 in the Pixel 10a is built more for on-device AI tasks like call screening, live translation, Pixel-specific features than for peak compute.

The iPhone 17e uses USB-C 2.0 (versus USB-C 3.2 on both Android phones) and Wi-Fi 6 rather than Wi-Fi 6E. These are real step-downs in interface capability that affect both data transfer speeds and wireless performance in congested environments.

The iPhone 17e has a single rear camera. There is no ultrawide lens and no telephoto. At this price bracket, competing against phones with multi-lens systems, this is a significant hardware limitation for anyone who uses wide-angle or zoom photography regularly.

The S26 FE has the largest main sensor at 1/1.57 inches and the only dedicated telephoto lens in the group, offering 3x optical zoom. It also supports 8K video recording, which neither the 10a not the 17e matches. The Pixel 10a’s main sensor at 1/2.0 inches is smaller than the S26 FE’s but Google’s computational photography typically narrows the gap in real-world image quality.

The Pixel 10a has the largest battery and supports bypass charging, which is useful for gaming while plugged in since power bypasses the battery cell entirely. The S26 FE charges the fastest at 45W and supports reverse wireless charging for accessories. The iPhone 17e’s wired charging speed is 20W which Apple claims can reach 50% in 30 minutes, similar to the Pixel 10a’s rate.

Software and updates

All three phones commit to long-term software support. The S26 FE launches on Android 17 with seven major OS updates. The Pixel 10a runs on Android 16 with the same seven-update commitment, meaning it is one version behind the S26 FE. Apple does not formally commit to a specific number of iOS updates for the iPhone 17e, though Apple’s track record suggests 5 to 6 years of iOS support.

Verdict

Buy the Galaxy S26 FE if camera versatility is your priority. The triple camera system, 8K video, largest sensor and 3x telephoto make it the most complete imaging device in the group. The large 6.7-inch AMOLED display and 45W charging round out a strong all-round package.

Buy the Pixel 10a if you want the brightest display, the biggest battery and Google’s AI-driven camera processing in a more compact form. The bypass charging is a useful bonus for heavy users. Accept the slower wired charging and the absence of a telephoto lens.

Buy the iPhone 17e if iOS and the Apple ecosystem are non-negotiable and you can live with a single rear camera, a dimmer display and USB-C 2.0. The lightest design and the best IP rating in the group are genuine advantages, but it is the most hardware-limited of the three at what is likely the highest price.
