Apple is experiencing one of the biggest leadership shake-ups in years, with several well-known executives leaving or preparing to leave the company. The most notable departure is John Giannandrea, Apple’s senior vice president for Machine Learning and AI Strategy. Giannandrea, who joined Apple in 2018, has been a central figure in shaping the company’s AI strategy. Apple says he has stepped down from his role but stay on as an adviser until spring next year. At the same time, Alan Dye, the head of user interface design, has left the company to join Meta’s Reality Labs.
Two other major leaders, general counsel Kate Adams and Apple’s vice-president for environment, policy, and social initiatives Lisa Jackson have also announced plans to retire within the coming year.
The most uncertain situation surrounds Johny Srouji, Apple’s senior vice-president for hardware technologies and the architect of the company’s custom chips. According to Bloomberg, Srouji has told CEO Tim Cook that he is considering leaving th4e company.
These exits come soon after former COO Jeff Williams retired. In response, Apple has begun reshuffling key responsibilities. Software chief Craig Federighi is taking on more AI oversight, and Amar Subramanya, a former executive at Google and Microsoft, has joined as vice-president of AI.
Well, the exits highlight a broader trend: Apple is losing talent to competitors in the fast-moving AI space. Many researchers have been joined companies like Meta and OpenAI. This leadership shift comes at a sensitive time. Apple is dealing with delays in projects such as smart glasses, robotics, foldable devices, and a redesigned Siri.
