Reliance Jio says operators using “unfair and deceptive” means to stop customer exits
HIGHLIGHTS

In a letter to TRAI, Jio has said that operators are offering customised retention to those looking to port out of their network and has asked the authority to take action against them

In a letter to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), Reliance Jio has alleged that its competitors are using “unfair and deceptive” methods to stop customer exits from their networks. According to a report by PTI, these methods include customised retention offers for subscribers looking to port out of their network. As per their report, Jio has asked TRAI to take “strongest action” against Bharti Airtel, Vodafone and Idea Cellular. The operator calls this a violation of the licence norms, telecom tariff orders and mobile number portability (MNP) guidelines, and recommends the “highest penalty.”

The company claims that its competitors are offers subscribers certain tariff offers and promotional packs. These included the creation of specific STVs and post-paid plans, discounts in value of STVs and post-paid bill amounts in order to influence subscribers wanting to port out of their network.

In its five page letter to TRAI, the operator wrote, “At the outset, we submit that so far as these MNP offers are concerned, these are in gross violation of extant telecom laws including Telecom Tariff Order, 1999.”

The battle between Reliance Jio and other operators has been going on for a very long time, especially between Airtel and Jio. Back in December, Airtel challenged TRAI’s decision to to allow Jio to continue its free services beyond the 90-day limit through the Happy New Year offer and filed a plea with the Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT). The plea has been deferred to April 20.
