Nokia denies plans to re-enter smartphone market
Nokia officially denies rumors about re-entering the smartphone market next year.
Nokia has officially denied plans to re-enter the smartphone market, putting to rest the recent rumors circulating that the Finnish giant is planning to launch new handsets in 2016.
Last week, many reports suggesting that Nokia is planning a comeback to the smartphone market next year had surfaced online. The Finnish company had recently launched the Nokia N1 tablet that was sold out in minutes after its launch. Nokia had licensed its design but the device was manufactured and commercialized by Foxconn. New reports had remerged online that stated that Nokia is planning to launch smartphones in a similar manner and will license designs to third party manufacturers. A Chinese newspaper also quoted Mike Wang, the President of Nokia China, stating that the Finnish company is planning to manufacture smartphones in the Chinese city of Sichuan.
Nokia has officially stated that all these reports as false that quoted a Nokia executive as confirming the company's ambitions to manufacture smartphones out of an R&D facility in China.
Nokia's official statement: Nokia notes recent news reports claiming the company communicated an intention to manufacture consumer handsets out of a R&D facility in China. These reports are false, and include comments incorrectly attributed to a Nokia Networks executive. Nokia reiterates it currently has no plans to manufacture or sell consumer handsets.
Nokia's devices and services business was acquired by Microsoft in a $7.2 billion deal in 2013. According to the terms of the deal, Nokia isn’t allowed to launch any phone bearing its name until the end of next year.
