Samsung could be working on a new way to go bezel-less on smartphones.

Samsung could be working on a new way to go bezel-less on smartphones and not have to rely on the infamous notch to house front-facing camera sensors. The better part of 2018 saw almost all smartphone manufacturers resorting to the notch to get a near-bezel free look on their smartphone displays, but Samsung, with the Galaxy S9 and Note 9, did not succumb to the trend. Some manufacturers like Vivo and Oppo, and soon Xiaomi with the Mi Mix 3, even adopted slider mechanisms to pop the front camera out, but it seems like Samsung has its own solution in mind when it comes to placing front facing cameras in a way that the display still gets maximum real estate.

During a presentation at the Samsung OLED forum, the company reportedly detailed a roadmap for smartphone design in 2019. Looking ahead, Samsung said that it is working on under-screen sensors, which include fingerprint as well as camera sensors. Yes, Samsung is looking to place the front-facing camera under the display, and it could be the company’s way of avoiding the notch completely in a bid to go bezel-less. Since the roadmap was just recently shared, it is unlikely that the Galaxy S10, which is expected to launch in February 2019, will get the new in-display cameras.

Apart from in-display cameras, Samsung also outlined plans for screen-sound technology or as the company reportedly calls it ‘Sound on Display’, which could see speakers built into the screen as well. The South Korean electronics major also highlighted a display feature called Haptics on Display to allow for vibration from the screen.

Word is that Samsung has a few of prototypes using the in-displau camera technology and it is expected that smartphones bearing these in-display cameras will start launching sometime in 2020.
