Touchscreen MacBook Pro could get delayed

With talk of a touchscreen, OLED display, and a new generation of Apple silicon, the upcoming MacBook Pro has been the topic of discussion for months now. But just when we thought we are close to experiencing it, there’s talk of a delay.

Earlier, the MacBook Pro with an OLED touchscreen was expected to launch later this year. But now, a new report by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has claimed that the laptop might not launch until 2027.

In addition to this, the Mac Studio might also face a delay. Apple was reportedly targeting a mid-year refresh for the desktop, but that plan seems to have shifted as well. The launch could now happen much later, possibly around October. Interestingly, Apple is already facing shortages of existing Mac Studio units, which hints at strong demand as well as supply constraints.

What this means is that Apple’s entire Mac refresh cycle might feel slower than usual, especially for users expecting back-to-back hardware upgrades.

So, what is causing the delay?

So, coming to the most important question – what exactly is causing this delay. The reason is something that you might have guessed already. Yes, global shortage of RAM.

It is known that the entire tech industry is dealing with RAM and SSD shortage and Apple also doesn’t seem to be immune from this issue. Limited supply of key components means Apple cannot produce enough units to meet expected demand at launch, which forces it to push timelines.

Meanwhile, reports also suggest that everything is running on time as far as the software side of things is concerned. Features expected to support the new touchscreen MacBook Pro are likely to arrive with macOS 27 later this year. This confirms that the delay is purely hardware related.

What to expect from new MacBook Pro?

The next MacBook Pro is expected to be one of the biggest changes Apple has made to the lineup in years. Leaks and reports have earlier pointed out that the laptop could feature an OLED display for better contrast and colours, along with a possible Dynamic Island style cutout. Then of course, there are rumours of the MacBook Pro being equipped with a touchscreen, something Apple has avoided for years.

Under the hood, the device is expected to run on next generation chips, likely the M6 Pro and M6 Max. There are also hints that Apple could position this as a more premium variant, possibly sitting above the current models in pricing.

If that happens, Apple may continue selling existing MacBook Pro versions alongside the new one, giving users more options depending on their budget. For now, though, nothing is official and all of this info needs to be taken with a pinch of salt.
