LG G8 ThinQ to come with front-facing ToF sensor for 3D facial recognition and AR

LG G8 ThinQ to come with front-facing ToF sensor for 3D facial recognition and AR
HIGHLIGHTS

The sensor will reportedly work to make face unlock much less power intensive as compared to solutions like Apple’s FaceID.

Key Highlights:

  • LG announced the LG G8 ThinQ will come with a ToF sensor on the front.
  • The ToF sensor will be made by Infineon and will reportedly take less power to offer 3D facial recognition.
  • The LG G8 ThinQ is slated to launch on February 24, ahead of MWC in Barcelona.

The upcoming LG flagship will reportedly come with a time of flight sensor on the front for 3D face unlock and improved selfies. The Korean smartphone maker announced the LG G8 ThinQ will come with a ToF sensor made by Infineon.  The sensor will reportedly work to make face unlock much less power intensive as compared to solutions like Apple’s FaceID.

While Apple’s TruDepth camera is a miniaturised version of Xbox 360 Kinect where it projects thousands of laser dots on a person’s face to get a 3D depth map, ToF sensor is one that Microsoft later used in the revamped Kinect for the Xbox One. The ToF sensor captures the time it takes for an infrared ray of light to reflect off an object. It reportedly gives more accurate results while requiring lesser compute power.

Even Apple is planning to implement a ToF sensor on the back of the upcoming iPhone XI as we found in the leaked renders.

However, the LG G8 ThinQ will certainly not be the first device to use the technology. The LG View 20 and the Oppo R17 Pro already come with a ToF sensor on the back, meant to improve portrait shots with more realistic effects, and for augmented reality and 3D motion gaming. The same Infineon Real3 chip, however, was used before in the Lenovo Phab 2 Pro as well, a Project Tango phone that gave a glimpse of AR before it became mainstream.

Apart from 3D facial recognition, LG also teased a “Goodbye Touch” tagline for the LG G8 ThinQ, hinting the upcoming flagship will come with gesture controls. There are also rumours the phone will come with a second screen.

LG has an event scheduled on February 24 in Barcelona, a day before Mobile World Congress kicks off.
