Code for the Android Open Source Project contains references to three devices codenamed Walleye, Muskie and Taimen
Google may be planning to launch three new Pixel-branded devices this year, and all three might be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835 platform. Inside the code for the Android Open Source Project (AOSP), Winfuture.de spotted references to three new devices codenamed Walleye, Muskie and Taimen. The code also contains references to MSM8998, which is the model number of the Snapdragon 835 platform.
Walleye and Muskie are believed to be the successors to the Pixel XL and Pixel smartphones, while Taimen might be a device with a much larger display, possibly a phablet. The inclusion of the Snapdragon 835 should not come as much of a surprise considering that both of the current generation smartphones come with Snapdragon 821 platform, which was Qualcomm’s flagship SoC at the time of the phone’s launch.
The Pixel 2 is tipped to feature waterproofing as well as an improved camera. Leaked renders suggest that the device may come with a new design and a complete glass back. Google’s SVP of Hardware, Rick Osterloh has confirmed that the company will launch a successor to the Pixel series and that it would remain a premium device.
In case you are curious, all three code names are names of fish, which is something of a theme with Google’s smartphones. The Pixel and Pixel XL were similarly codenamed Sailfish and Marlin.
