Switching from postpaid to prepaid now easier as DoT cuts cooling-off period for mobile users

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has announced changes to the mobile number conversion process for postpaid and prepaid services. Effective June 10, 2025, the mandatory cooling-off period for converting from postpaid to prepaid and vice versa has been significantly shortened. According to the new guidelines, mobile subscribers will only have to wait 30 days before switching between prepaid and postpaid services, and vice versa, after their initial switch.

Previously, it had a 90-day lock-in period. However, the DoT clarified that for any subsequent conversions using the One-Time Password (OTP) method, the original 90-day waiting period will still be applicable.

“In partial modification of these instructions, it has been decided that a subscriber may now be allowed to reconvert after 30 days from the date of first conversion,” the Ministry of Communications noted in a recent guideline shared by the DoT on X. “However, for any subsequent OTP-based conversions, they shall be permitted to reconvert only after 90 days from the date of the previous conversion,” It added.

Additionally, the government has also directed telecom operators to inform users of the applicable lock-in periods before initiating any conversion process.

Notably, users can also opt for alternative ways to reconvert within the lock-in period by undergoing physical verification at authorised Points of Sale (PoS) and completing the standard Know Your Customer (KYC). “In case a subscriber wishes to reconvert within the lock-in period, they may still do so by following the extant KYC process,” the directive added.

While the new policy will simplify the reconversion process, the DoT stated that all other existing security, compliance, and regulatory requirements will remain unchanged.
