It seems like Samsung is working on a much improved version of its Gear VR headset. According to Korean website Naver, the new headset will no longer depend on a phone’s display, but will sport a separate OLED display with a pixel density of 2000ppi. By comparison, The Oculus rift offers a pixel density of 460 ppi, while the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ offer a pixel density of 570 and 529 ppi respectively.
Samsung isn’t the only company looking at launching standalone VR headsets. At this year’s I/O event, Google showcased a prototype for a standalone VR headset, which has apparently been developed by the company itself. HTC and Lenovo be the first to offer mainstream VR headsets based on the concept.
Speaking of HTC, the company recently unveiled a new VR headset called LinkVR, which is designed to work with the HTC U11 smartphone, but comes with its own display. The company also claimed that the headset was the first of its type to offer six-degrees-of-freedom (6DOF) tracking. The headset sports two 3.6-inch LCD displays with a resolution of 1080 x 1200 pixels and connects to the smartphone via a USB Type-C cable. The headset is expected to go on sale in late June.
