Meta to train new workforce for data centres amid the layoff reports

Meta recently reported that they have started a new programme in which they train people to work as fibre technicians on data centre construction sites. As the company works towards increasing the number of data centres they currently have, they are often held back because the current market has a shortage of skilled people in the domain. The company says that the rapid growth of AI is not just increasing demand for powerful chips and servers but also for skilled workers who can build and maintain data centres. Recognising a shortage of such talent, Meta is stepping in with a hands-on approach. It plans to train people with little or no prior experience and prepare them for specialised roles.

Meta calls the training programme ‘LevelUp’. According to the company executives, the programme is designed in a way that trains the participant as a fibre technician who plays a key role in setting up data centres. It is a four-week course developed in partnership with CBRE. Meta says the training will be free and open to a wide group of applicants, including the recent school graduates as well as professionals looking to switch their careers.

Participants will go through a mix of classroom discussions, practical lab sessions and group activities. The focus will be on passing on the technical skills needed to install and manage fibre systems inside large data facilities. These systems are essential for moving large volumes of data quickly and reliably.

After completing the programme, the participants may get the opportunity to work on Meta’s data centre construction projects in the United States. However, the final call will still remain with the contractor. The company currently operates or is building 27 data centres across the country.

Companies like Meta are investing heavily in building more data centres across the world, which are critical for training and running AI models. On one hand, the company is trying to train people so they are ready for jobs. But on the other hand, reports say it might be planning to lay off hundreds of employees. Leaked information also shows that Meta is now putting more focus on areas like artificial intelligence.
