Are Facebook and Instagram down? Many unable to use Meta’s social media platforms
Facebook and Instagram down: Many people across the United States faced problems using Facebook and Instagram on Friday morning. The outage was not limited to the US, as some users in India also reported difficulties logging into their accounts. Users said they were unable to refresh their feeds, and content was not loading properly. Facebook, Instagram, and Facebook Messenger, all the platforms owned by Meta, were reportedly affected by the outage. The affected users quickly turned to the social media platform X to vent out their frustration as the downtime affected those who used these social media sites to communicate and receive information. At the time of writing, Meta has not issued any statement regarding the problem, leaving the users stranded.
SurveyMeta apps facing outage
According to reports, Meta-owned apps, including Facebook, Facebook Messenger and Instagram, started facing disruptions in the service around 7:15PM IST. The outage is not limited to one or two countries. Users from countries such as Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Nepal, Singapore, Canada, and the United States have reported problems. Many affected users have also shared their experiences on X.
While there are problems with Instagram and Facebook, WhatsApp appears to have been running fine without any difficulties. It seems that I was able to test both the app and web versions and found them to be functional at the time of writing.
Our testing
When we checked DownDetector, we did not find any major complaints related to the outage. However, while we tried it ourselves, Instagram would not launch at first several attempts. Thereafter, a message saying “Instagram Keeps Stopping” would appear on the screen. On the other hand, Facebook seems to be opening, but it is launching slower than usual at the time of writing.
Reason for outage
The exact reason for the outage has still not been identified. Sources indicate that the problem is affecting users from several countries. This means that it may be a matter of servers rather than some localised software problem.
Meta’s response
At the time of writing, Meta has not issued an official statement regarding the current situation. Therefore, we cannot confirm when the services will be back up.
