Google brought the Always-On Display (AOD) feature on Android Oreo last year. Samsung was one of the first companies to support a photo in the AOD feature. It seems that Google has taken a cue from the the South Korean tech giant and is reported to bring wallpaper support on Always-On displays in Android Pie. It seems that it is still unavailable for the people who have got the Android Pie 9.0 update and is expected to come with other features like ‘Slices’ later in the fall.

According to the folks at XDA Developers, they first spotted the hints of this feature in the Android Developer Preview 1 for the Google Pixel smartphone. But now they claim to have accessed the full source code and commit history, and confirmed that the feature is in the works. The AOD feature can be found under the Ambient Display sub-heading under the Display Settings menu.

According to the first commit, for a wallpaper to show on the AOD, there is a need to define the “supportsAmbientMode” attribute as “true” in the android.service.wallpaper metadata. The second commit states that the wallpaper on the AOD will hide automatically after one minute. “Hide wallpaper by cross fading back scrim. This increases battery life since black pixels won’t drain power,” the commit says. Comparatively, Samsung’s AOD not only supports static wallpapers for some time but GIFs as well.
