Stepwell: A new location in BGMI

Time for a quick history lesson: a stepwell is a traditional Indian structure built to reach and store groundwater, featuring a descending series of steps that lead down to the water. And inspired from this, Krafton has added a new location in the game.

With tiered vertical combat, twisting corridors, sniper sightlines, and ambush-friendly blind spots, the Stepwell demands precision movement, tight squad coordination, and mastery of positioning. It offers high ground advantage, visibility, ambush opportunities, and defensive play. Krafton’s VP and Head of India Publishing, Minu Lee, says that the Stepwell is more than just a location.

“With its layered design, seasonal interactivity, and tactical possibilities, it sets a new benchmark for how we integrate local inspiration with global gameplay standards. The 4.0 Update embodies our vision of blending India’s heritage with immersive, world-class gameplay. It is also a testament to our commitment of delivering immersive, culturally resonant experiences tailored for Indian gamers. From supernatural gameplay elements to genre-defining survival formats, we continue to evolve BGMI into a platform that reflects both innovation and identity.”

Celebrating the auspicious festival of Diwali, the Stepwell will come alive with player-triggered Diwali fireworks between October 18-24, allowing squads to celebrate mid-match while contesting for control of this high-stakes battleground.

BGMI update brings haunted mansions, ghosts, and new modes

BGMI 4.0 update comes with a spooky twist. Players will find haunted mansions with eerie decor, floating platforms, and classic Halloween tropes like pumpkin zombies and a Pumpkin Monster boss fight. One of the more interesting twists is the Ghost companion – a sort of spectral sidekick that follows you through the match, offering abilities such as shield protection, armor repair, floating balloon transport and more. If you get knocked out, you might transform into a Prankster Ghost that can still play, but in limited ways like bombing or marking enemies, or otherwise helping the squad even after defeat.

Another fantasy vehicle added is the Magic Broom, which lets players fly or glide short distances. This is at times practical for moving across maps or escaping danger. There are also themed events and rewards linked to the Soiree, encouraging players to drop in, explore, and engage with the spooky features.

New weapon and other changes

The update also brings with it an all-new weapon – the new Mortar. It allows both close-range direct targeting and long-range fire beyond visible terrain. Essentially, it’s meant to offer tactical explosive support, allowing players to bombard opponent positions or clear zones from a distance.

Several other weapons have also been tuned. Shotguns like the DBS and certain bolt-action rifles have been adjusted to improve fairness and reduce overpowering in certain scenarios. Attachments (stocks, fore grips etc.) have had their stats reworked to enhance customisation and player control. Also, visual improvements, animations, network optimisations, and better mid-range/mobile performance are part of the mix.

How to download the BGMI 4.0 update

Players on Android can download the update directly from the Google Play Store by searching for “BGMI” and tapping Update. On iOS, you can head to the App Store and check the Updates tab or search for BGMI to trigger the latest version. Since the file size is large, Krafton recommends connecting to Wi-Fi and ensuring you have enough free storage. After installation, some in-game resource packs and maps may require additional downloads when you first launch the game, so it’s best to keep extra space available.
