YouTube Music adds playback sync across devices: How it works
YouTube Music playback now syncs between multiple mobile devices, not just mobile and web.
The last played song appears automatically in the miniplayer on any signed-in device.
This may be a server-side update and will be rolled out in phases.
YouTube Music has expanded its playback sync feature, allowing users to resume their listening queue across nearly all devices. Earlier, YouTube Music playback syncing worked between a mobile device and the desktop web app, but switching between two phones or tablets did not preserve the queue or progress. This update, now rolling out, allows playback progress to carry over between phones, tablets, and the web, including Apple devices. 9to5Google first reported this change, and let’s see how it works here. We will also get to why playback sync across devices matters.
SurveyHow YouTube Music playback sync work
According to the report, YouTube Music’s Now Playing queue now picks up exactly where you left off, regardless of which device you were using before. For example, a playlist paused on an iPad can be resumed later on an Android phone without manually searching for the track.
When you open the YouTube Music app on any mobile device, the service automatically loads the last song you were listening to into the miniplayer. Tapping play resumes the same track and queue. The feature works across devices as long as you are signed into the same Google account. But do note that there is no button to manually switch playback between devices, and playback does not transfer instantly.

Why this feature matters
For users who move frequently between devices, such as a phone, tablet, and laptop, this removes friction from daily listening. It also makes YouTube Music more competitive in an area where it has lagged behind rivals, especially for users already invested in the Google ecosystem.

Spotify has been a pioneer with the Spotify Connect feature that syncs active sessions across all logged-in devices. Meanwhile, Apple Music also offers continuity within Apple’s own ecosystem.
YouTube Music’s approach is simpler. It syncs progress and queues, but does not yet allow live device control or instant playback switching. Even so, the update narrows the gap and makes the service more practical for everyday use.
The new update is likely enabled server-side. This means you may have to keep the app updated and wait for this feature.
