India’s cooking gas system is going to change a bit from next month. New rules for LPG cylinders will start from May 1, 2026. These changes may affect cylinder prices and also when people can book a new one. According to the reports, these changes are happening because fuel prices around the world have gone up, mainly due to tensions in West Asia and the Gulf region. Even though gas supply is still stable, the government wants to manage it better and stop misuse. The new rules may include limits on booking cylinders and stricter checks during delivery. Here’s everything you should know.
SurveyThings changing from May 1
Here are some of the things that users can expect to change starting May 1, 2026:
- Booking frequency: People living in the urban areas will now have to wait at least 25 days before booking another domestic LPG cylinder.
- OTP for delivery: You will need an OTP (delivery code) to receive the gas cylinder, so delivery is safer and given only to the right person.
- eKYC is required: People under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana must complete Aadhaar-based eKYC to keep getting their subsidy.
- Switch to PNG: If your area has the availability of piped natural gas (PNG), then the LPG supply may be stopped after giving 3 months’ notice. This is done to encourage the households to switch to PNG.

Domestic vs commercial LPG cylinders: Price hike

The price of LPG cylinders used for domestic purposes has mostly stayed the same even after the global tensions. They have just seen one small change prior to this year. However, on the other side, the price of cylinders used by businesses has increased many times in the past few months. This shows that the government is trying to keep prices stable for households, while letting businesses handle more of the cost increase.
