The feature lets users share their real-time location with select contacts
Google has introduced a real-time location sharing feature on Google Maps’ Android and iOS apps. As the name would suggest, it lets users share their real-time location with others. The recipients would then be able to view the location on Android, iPhone, mobile web, and desktops.
Sanket Gupta, Product Manager, Google Maps, stated, “Location sharing on Google Maps is rolling worldwide over the coming week, and you’ll be able to quickly let your friends and family know where you are and when you’ll get where you’re going. The answer to “where are you?” is only a tap away.”
To use the feature, users need to open the side menu, or tap the blue dot, which represents where the user is. They will then get an option to ‘Share Location’ and then select they contacts they wish to share their location with. Users will also be able to choose how long they wish to share their location for. An icon above the compass will let the user know that they are currently sharing their location.
Earlier this year, Google added a new feature, which allowed users to hail an Uber from within the app itself. Before this, the app would only show estimated prices for the trip, but the request process had to be completed via the Uber app. Earlier this month, Google Maps expanded its Transit feature to seven more cities in India. The newly added cities included Chandigarh, Lucknow, Vadodara, Indore, Mysore, Surat and Coimbatore.
