Meta could roll out the subscription-based model to adhere to European guidelines.

The European Union has issued some privacy guidelines for social media platforms like Instagram and Facebook.

With a subscription-based model, not only can users have an ad-free experience but the companies can generate their revenue too.

We love our screen time and social media, right? But what is the most annoying part of it? Yes, the ads! Random ads popping on our feeds left, right, and center. Sometimes the ads are so accurate that they leave us in shock how does it know?

How nice it would have been if Facebook and Instagram were ad-free.

Well, there’s a good chance that what I am hoping for might come true. Meta could be taking its platforms ad-free. After TikTok, which has an ad-free subscription plan of $5 a month, Meta could also be following suit and taking its platforms ad-free. For Instagram and Facebook, Meta could follow a subscription-based plan that will allow you to access social media without any ads.

According to a Wall Street Journal report, Meta could roll out the subscription-based model to adhere to European guidelines, and as a result, it is focusing this plan on European users currently. This subscription-based plan could cost the users somewhere around $17 a month.

Now why is this being done? The European Union has issued some privacy guidelines for social media platforms like Instagram and Facebook to give users an option to not see the ads. This is done in response to Meta’s way of using user data to show personalized ads on feeds, mostly with users having no way out. EU wants users to give their consent if they wish to see such ads.

With a subscription-based model, not only can users have an ad-free experience but the companies can generate their revenue too which usually comes from running ads. But the free model with ads will still be there.

Meta could consider this as a way out from not popping ads on users feeds but it is still not known if the European Union will accept this as Meta’s answer to its policy. We have to wait and see how things turn out for Meta and if the model will be brought out in other markets too.
