X (formerly Twitter) today announced that users can now block unverified accounts from replying to their posts. This means that after enabling the feature, only verified users will be able to reply to the post.

“You can now limit replies to verified users,” the company posted, along with a screenshot of the new feature.
Although this feature aims to handle bots on the platform, many users are criticising it.
While one user said, “This is censoring people who don’t pay,” another posted, “This is lame. Not everyone wants to pay or has the money to pay. I’m not silencing my followers/friends who aren’t verified. Their voice matters too.”
Last month, Musk had said that X would move behind a paywall as it would charge users “a small monthly payment.” According to him, this change would be necessary to handle the problem of bots on the platform. Musk didn’t reveal what the new subscription payment would cost, but described it as a “small amount of money.”
It’s important to note that since Musk took over the platform last year, the company has been suggesting X users to subscribe to its paid subscription service ‘X Premium’. This subscription service offers a number of features such as the ability to edit posts up to five times within one hour, half the ad load, prioritised rankings in search and conversations, the ability to write longer posts and upload longer videos, early access to new features and much more.
