Elon Musk announces XChat with encrypted chats, disappearing messages and phone-free calls
Elon Musk has introduced XChat.
Features include end-to-end encrypted messages, disappearing chats and more.
You can do audio and video calls across all platforms without needing a phone number.
Elon Musk has introduced XChat, a new messaging feature, on his platform X (formerly Twitter). With this latest addition, Musk is taking another big step toward turning X into an all-in-one platform for daily use. In a post, Musk shared that XChat offers end-to-end encryption, disappearing messages and support for sending any type of file. Additionally, you can do audio and video calls across all platforms without needing a phone number.
One of the standout parts of XChat is the new type of encryption Musk mentioned. He called it “(Bitcoin style) encryption” and said it was built with a “whole new architecture.” However, he did not explain exactly how this encryption works or how it compares to existing systems used in popular apps like WhatsApp.

All new XChat is rolling out with encryption, vanishing messages and the ability to send any kind of file. Also, audio/video calling.

This is built on Rust with (Bitcoin style) encryption, whole new architecture.
Last week, the company said that they were pausing work on its encrypted DM feature. That may have been because XChat was already in development, and the platform is now moving away from its older DM system altogether.
X has been offering a limited version of encrypted DMs for paying users over the past two years, TechCrunch reported. But with XChat, the messaging experience appears to be getting a full makeover with stronger privacy features.

Musk has repeatedly said that he wants X to become a central part of everyday life, not just a place to post. With XChat, the platform is now entering a space already dominated by apps like WhatsApp and Telegram. As X continues to evolve beyond social media, XChat could play a big role in helping the platform become something much bigger.
