How to tag someone on your Instagram story: Easy guide

Instagram has become a hub for sharing life’s moments with friends, family, and followers and Instagram stories have revolutionised the way we share moments and connect with our audience. Among its wide range of features, tagging individuals in your stories stands out as one of the most powerful tools for engagement. Whether you want to highlight a friend, collaborate with someone or give credit to a business, tagging on Instagram stories amplifies the interactive experience.

In this simple guide, we will tell you how to easily tag someone on your Instagram stories. From identifying the right person to adding the tag, this step-by-step guide aims to make the tagging process a breeze.

How to tag someone on your Instagram story

Step 1: Open the Instagram app on your Android or iOS device.

Step 2: Tap the plus icon present at the bottom or swipe right anywhere in Feed.

Step 3: Scroll to Story at the bottom.

Step 4: Tap the circle button at the bottom of the screen to take a photo, or tap and hold it to record a video. You can also choose a photo or video from your phone’s gallery or camera roll, by swiping up anywhere on the screen.

Step 5: After you select a photo or video to share, tap the text option (double-A icon) present at the top.

Step 6: Type @ followed by the person’s username whom you want to tag, then select the person you’d like to mention.

Step 7: Tap Done.

Step 8: Once done and you are ready to share, tap the Your story option present at the bottom left.

If you forgot to mention someone in your story, you can tag them after posting the story by tapping the three dots present at the bottom right of your story, and then selecting the Add Mentions option.

Things to keep in mind 

1. You can mention up to 20 people in each photo or video you share on your Instagram story.
2. People you mention will get a notification telling them that you’ve tagged them in your story. They’ll also get a direct message from you that includes a preview of your story. This preview disappears from the message thread after 24 hours.
3. The individuals you’ve mentioned have the option to reshare the story to their own story, unless you’ve adjusted your sharing settings to prevent them from doing so.
4. If you allow others to re-share your story, their followers will also be able to view your story, even if your account is set to private.
5. If you tag someone in your existing story, their username won’t be visibly displayed in your story, but they will receive a notification about the mention.
6. If you’re unable to tag someone, it’s possible that they’ve adjusted their privacy settings to control who can mention them.
