A smartphone or a power bank? Realme’s 15,000mAh concept phone blurs the line
In the last 2-3 years, we have seen a great evolution in the world of smartphones. The cameras have become capable of competing with professional cameras, AI has taken over, processors are as powerful as those of PC’s, and even on the software front, things are way smoother now. But how smartphone batteries have evolved, it’s still surprising sometimes. To make it even more futuristic, Realme has now revealed a concept phone with a 15,000mAh battery. Previously, we did a story about Realme’s 10,000mAh battery concept phone, and before we got over it, there’s an even more audacious phone in Realme’s pipeline.
SurveyFour days on a single charge
The highlight is, of course, the battery. At 15,000mAh, the number is top-notch in itself, but the use cases make it even more striking. According to Realme:
- 4 days of standard usage on a single charge
- 18 hours of continuous video recording
- 53 hours of non-stop video playback
I mean that kind of endurance pushes the phone into power bank territory, except without the bulk we usually associate with oversized batteries. But for now, these are still claims; we have yet to test them out in real-life scenarios.
The tech behind it
So, basically, you stack four iPhone 16s together, even after that, this Realme phone has a bigger battery. The leap is made possible by 100% full silicon anode battery technology, which is new and more reliable for a battery this big than carbon anode battery technology. According to Realme, this allows the battery to achieve 1200 Wh/L energy density, the highest ever in a smartphone. In simpler terms, more energy can be packed into the same physical space, which is why this concept phone doesn’t feel like a brick in your pocket.
Why it matters
If you look back, for years now, battery backup has been one category that hasn’t been too disruptive. I am not saying that there hasn’t been any growth, but if you compare it with other specs like cameras, displays, and processors, these categories have seen generational leaps, while battery gains have been modest. The 15,000mAh concept challenges that stagnation head-on.
And it’s not very difficult to imagine the appeal. Think, a device that could double as your primary phone and your emergency charger for wearables, speakers, or even a laptop. For travellers, outdoor workers, or anyone tired of carrying a power bank, the convenience factor is huge here.
The road ahead
However, currently, it is just a concept smartphone. It doesn’t have a name, price tag, or launch date. But Realme has made it clear that this isn’t just a design exercise. By showcasing it on the company’s 7th anniversary, Realme is signalling its intent to keep pushing battery innovation. And it will be interesting to see where it is headed.
Whether this 15,000mAh battery-powered phone rolls out or not, only time will tell, but it definitely sets the stage for the next wave of smartphone competition.
