OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Tesla chief Elon Musk have unexpectedly found common ground over the rapid development of artificial intelligence. Both tech leaders, while resharing a message from Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, supported calls for the AI industry to slow the race to build increasingly powerful systems. Amodei urged companies to take a more cautious approach to advanced AI, warning that the technology could eventually move beyond human control. Despite differences between OpenAI and Anthropic, Altman agreed that controlling the pace of AI development has become an important issue. He said the matter has been discussed extensively at OpenAI in recent weeks. Musk also backed the call, highlighting growing concerns over AI’s rapid advancement.

He also shared an essay explaining why the AI industry should slow down and called for greater caution as AI systems become more powerful and potentially harder to understand or control.

The post was later re-shared by the OpenAI CEO, Sam Altman, where he stated that he agrees with Amodei that the industry needs to “pace the frontier”. He said the issue has been a major subject of internal discussions at OpenAI, suggesting that the company is also considering how quickly it should push ahead with its most advanced AI systems.

Elon Musk, who has repeatedly warned about the risks of advanced AI, also supported Amodei’s position. His support brings more attention to the call because of his long involvement in the technology industry and his AI company, xAI. At the same time, some of Musk’s old tweets are getting attention again. In those posts, he warned about the need to keep AI under control and highlighted the risks it could pose.

The agreement between Altman, Amodei and Musk does not mean that the industry has decided to stop AI development. Instead, it is about how fast companies should move while building stronger safeguards. OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Meta and other firms are competing to develop systems that can perform increasingly complex tasks.
