AMD uses new 360-degree capture camera to develop and promote Baahubali: The Conclusion

The new technology is initially being used to develop and promote the upcoming movie, Baahubali: The Conclusion. To create such experiences, AMD built a new camera called the ‘bb360cc’ that cost Rs. 10 crore and was developed over 6 months.

AMD showcased new technology that can bring 360 video and Virtual Reality to millions at the Mumbai Film Festival (2016), organized by the Mumbai Academy of the Moving Image (MAMI). Utilizing a bleeding edge Virtual Reality capture instrument with up to 32 cameras as well as AMD’s renowned GPU-accelerated video stitching software in conjunction with Radeon™ Pro Graphics, the new technology is being used initially to develop content to promote the upcoming Baahubali: The Conclusion, a movie directed by SS Rajamouli scheduled to premiere on April 28, 2017.
To create these experiences, AMD has built the radical new VR capture camera – the bb360cc – and leading-edge 360-degree video stitching software. Costing INR 10 Crore and developed over 6 months, the bb360cc provides real-time VR preview and up to 32 cameras. Using AMD-created Project Loom software, videographers can rapidly stitch 360-degree video, often in real-time or nearly so, eclipsing the time needed using alternative techniques. The open source Project Loom software is expected to be widely available to content creators by the end of the year.

The Sword of Baahubali is a very ambitious real-time computer graphics VR experience that is designed to push the limits of next generation GPU hardware.”

Under the creative direction of SS Rajamouli, Arka Media Works and AMD’s Radeon Technologies Group (RTG) are using the new technology to collaborate on two pieces of compelling VR content: a 360-degree video titled “On the Sets of Baahubali” and a fully immersive VR experience, “The Sword of Baahubali.” On the Sets of Baahubali is available now, and was shown to attendees of MAMI on October 22nd and 23rd along with early takes of The Sword of Baahubali. “We are beyond thrilled to have Baahubali: The Conclusion and AMD’s Radeon Technologies Group showcase the world’s most advanced VR experience for the first time here at MAMI,” said Anupama Chopra, director of the JIo MAMI 18th Mumbai Film Festival with Star.
AMD’s partnership with Baahubali: The Conclusion is aimed at delivering a Premium VR experience on devices such as Oculus Rift and HTC Vive and pushes the envelope of photo realistic VR rendering in real-time. The ultimate goal of AMD is to bring VR to millions across the globe using immersive and future-ready technologies. AMD has provided key effects production technologies for a variety of motion pictures including Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith (marking its 10th year anniversary), Machete Kills, Predators, Shorts, Spy Kids 4D, and many more. Most recently, the AMD is also working closely to help bring the ASSASSIN’S CREED movie VR Experience to Life.
