According to Bloomberg, Apple is currently speeding up development on its smart glasses, which are expected to be a direct competitor to Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses. The company reportedly plans to start large-scale prototype production later this year with the help of overseas suppliers.
Apple’s smart glasses are expected to come with cameras, microphones and speakers. This will likely allow the glasses to understand the surroundings and take voice commands through Siri. Users could use them to make phone calls, listen to music, get live translations and even receive turn-by-turn directions.
Internally, the glasses were once called N50, but the project is now known as N401. One person with knowledge of the glasses told Bloomberg that they will be “similar to the Meta product but better made.”
Meanwhile, Apple is also reportedly working on a special chip designed just for these glasses. If all goes according to plan, the company could begin mass production of this chip sometime next year.
Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses have already gained popularity, and the company is expected to launch a high-end version of them later this year. Meta is also reportedly planning to launch its first true AR glasses in 2027.
