Xiaomi Redmi 3 with metallic body, spotted on TENAA listings
A metal body on a budget device like the Redmi 3 is highly unlikely, although you never know with Xiaomi. Right?
Another day, another Xiaomi related leak. This time it’s the Xiaomi Redmi 3, the successor to the company’s budget Redmi 2 smartphone. The device has been spotted on Chinese certification center TENAA and is reportedly going to have a 720p 5 inch TFT display, along with a 1.5GHz octa-core processor and 2GB of RAM. In addition, the Redmi 3 will have 16GB of internal storage, along with micro-SD card support, a 13MP rear camera and a 5MP front camera. The overall dimensions of the device are supposedly going to be 139.3×69.6×8.5mm and it will weigh 143 grams. As has been the case with most Xiaomi phones, the Redmi 3 will run on older Android 5.1.1 Lollipop and will be available in Gray, Gold and Silver colours.
Further, according to the listing on TENAA, the model name of the Redmi 3 is Mi 2015811 and the device seems to be made of metal. What’s more likely though is that the phone will have a metal frame instead of being made completely of metal. A metallic body would increase the price of the device, while a metal rim on the side would be easier for a budget device. The phone is expected to hit the $110 (approx. Rs. 7,300) price point. Also, the rumoured TFT screen would be highly unlikely, since Xiaomi has always played special attention to making the display on its phones (even the Xiaomi Redmi 2) look premium. A TFT display wouldn't be the ideal choice for the same.
Of course, no confirmation has been received from Xiaomi yet and the company is expected to launch a bunch of new devices in 2016. Earlier leaks have pointed to the Snapdragon 820 powered Xiaomi Mi5, which should be launched around April next year. In addition, the company recently unveiled new versions for its Redmi Note smartphone.
The Chinese manufacturer has been silent for a while now, but it has continued to be in the news thanks to the various leaks and rumours. Industry experts and sources suggest that Xiaomi is simply giving its current devices time in the market, to ease the pressure on its production lines.
