Samsung leads Indian market, but losing grip: CMR report
HIGHLIGHTS

Despite leading, Samsung is now gradually losing its grip in the Indian market. Another interesting highlight of CMR's latest report is the fight for the no. 3 spot – battle between Lava, Karbonn and Intex.

Another research firm has claimed Samsung is leading the Indian market, while Micromax is among the top three smartphone brands in India. According to the CMR’s India Monthly Mobile Handsets Market Review, CY 2014, February 2015, Samsung continues to lead overall as well as Smartphones segment but competition gains ground. The report points out a tug-of-war among Indian brands Lava, Karbonn, Intex to stake claim to the third spot.

The report further says the India mobile handsets market grew at 4% in terms of shipments over CY 2013, to touch 257 million units during the period. Of this 77 million were Smartphones accounting for nearly 30% of all shipments, a first for India.  The Smartphones segment grew at 46% vis-à-vis CY 2013.

According to CMR’s report, Samsung has emerged as the overall leader in the India mobile phones market during CY (January-December) 2014, with a 16.5% share of shipments, followed by Micromax and Microsoft (Nokia) at 13.3%.

However, Samsung was seen to be losing its earlier firm grip on the market, as its share of the market showed a downward trend during the year, as compared to Micromax that gained primarily in 2Q (April-June) 2014, but then continued to remain flat during the rest of the year.

Commenting on the India Smartphones market, Karn Chauhan, Telecoms Analyst at CMR, said “With Smartphone penetration reaching a new high, leading brands vied with each other to provide the highest levels of selling experience. Going forward, the challenge would to provide customers equally high levels of after-sales experience across the length and breadth of the country. This will call for a deep focus and investment on improving distribution and servicing networks.”

Earlier, confusion triggered after different research firms Canalys and GFK pinned Samsung and Micromax at the top spot.

Counterpoint's research said Samsung led the overall mobile phone and smartphone market during the quarter with a market share of 16.1% and 27.4% respectively. Micromax maintained the second position in both overall and smartphone market closely following Samsung. Micromax smartphone shipments grew 75% Y-o-Y but declined sequentially.
