HIGHLIGHTS

Samsung has sold more phone units than Apple last quarter in the United States, boosting the Android platform’s market share in the country

A research report published by Kantar WorldPanel shows a healthy increase in Android’s market share in the United States, backed by increasing sales of the fresh Samsung Galaxy S6. Current data by Kantar states that Samsung’s Galaxy S6 is the third highest selling mobile phone in the United States market – homeground of Apple.

The iPhone 6 holds first place in units sold, followed by Samsung Galaxy S5. In overall numbers, Samsung has sold more units in the three months ending May 2015, after one full month of Samsung Galaxy S6 selling in US stores. Apple’s market share has fallen considerably, in comparison to the three months ending in April 2015. For the three-month period ending in April, Android smartphones held a 62.4% market share in US, while the iPhone’s market share was 33.2%.

In the three-month data composed till May 2015, Android’s market share shot up by a 2.5% margin, to currently occupy 64.9% of smartphones in the US. iOS devices fell by an almost equal range of 2.3%, to stand at 30.9%. It is interesting to note that Apple’s market share, till December 2014, was 47.7%, in comparison to the entire range of Android smartphones accounting for 47.6% of the market. Apple’s stronghold has considerably fallen since then.

According to PhoneArena, of an approximate 257 million Android devices sold across the world, Samsung alone has sold around 82 million devices: almost one-third of a market strewn with numerous phone makers. Other prominent phone-makers like HTC and Motorola has seen falling sales statistics, something that other companies as Huawei and Sony, who haven’t yet targeted the US market, are now setting sights on.

Along with Samsung, LG has also managed to almost double its sales in comparison to number of units sold last year. It will be interesting to see how Apple responds to dwindling market share in its own backyard.
