Last month, Xiaomi’s spin-off brand Redmi launched the K20 and the K20 Pro smartphones in China and in just a gap of eight days, the Chinese company has rolled out an update to the Pro variant of the series. The MIUI 10.3.8.0 stable update, which is 392MB in size, brings the Face Unlock feature. Apart from this, the update also brings three customisable Lock screen clock styles and Wi-Fi list sorting by signal strength. This is probably the first major update that the phone has got since it launched.
Redmi will launch the flagship device in India on June 15. Manu Kumar Jain, Global Vice President and Director of Xiaomi India, took to social media to reveal the launch date of the Redmi K20 Pro. Jain called it “a big, big knockout” in a 30 second video on Twitter. Xiaomi is calling the Redmi K20 and the K20 Pro, the “ultimate flagship killer”. The phone will compete with the OnePlus 7, OnePlus 7 Pro, Oppo Reno, Zenfone 6 (if launched) and the Black Shark 2 in the high-end segment.
Earlier, it was reported that the phone would launch as the Poco F2 in India, however, Jain started to tease the photo with its original name and shared some images of hoardings the company put at various places in the country. Not only that, those billboards were placed alongside the OnePlus 7 Pro ads with a neat wordplay taking a dig at the OnePlus 7 Series of phones.
The K20 Pro is Redmi’s first flagship phone and it features a Full HD+ 6.39-inch Super AMOLED display. The panel offers 1080 x 2340 pixels resolution and comes with a Gorilla Glass 6 protection. Thanks to a the pop-up selfie camera mechanism, the display stretches edge-to-edge delivering a screen-to-body-ratio of 91.6 percent, and an aspect ratio of 19.5:9. The phone is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 chipset which is clocked at 2.84Ghz. The Redmi K20 Pro ships with Game Turbo 2.0 to deliver an enhanced gaming experience.
On the back is a centrally-aligned vertically stacked triple camera setup with a primary shooter having the 48MP Sony IMX586 sensor. There is a 13MP secondary sensor with a wide-angle lens that offers a field-of-view of 124.89 degrees. The telephoto lens comes along with an 8MP sensor. Xiaomi says that the phone’s camera is able to record slow-motion video at up to 960fps. The selfie camera has a 20MP sensor, and it comes with a feature that lets users take a wide-angle selfie by just tilting the phone on right/left.
The K20 Pro was launched in four variants: 6GB RAM + 64GB storage, 6GB RAM + 128GB storage, 8GB RAM + 128GB storage and 8GB RAM + 256GB storage. There is no information about the variants that will launch in India.
