Microsoft introduces Windows 10 Editions

Microsoft has rebranded Windows Phone brand as Windows 10 Mobile. The company also revealed all the editions of Windows 10, scheduled to be released later this year.

Microsoft has revealed all the Windows 10 Editions that will be released later this year. The latest operating system, which will also be the last standlaone OS version, is scheduled to hit 190 countries and in 111 languages. Variants of the Windows 10 are – Windows 10 Home, Windows 10 Mobile (Windows Phone rebranded), Windows 10 Pro, Windows 10 Enterprise, Windows 10 Education, Windows 10 Mobile Enterprise and Windows 10 IoT Core.

First of the lot is Windows 10 Home. The OS is consumer-focused desktop edition, and is supposed to deliver experience for PCs, tablets and 2-in-1s. The OS comes with Cortana digital assitant, Edge web browser, Continuum tablet mode for touch-capable devices, Windows Hello face-recognition, iris and fingerprint scanner and apps such as Photos, Maps, Mail, Calender etc. Windows 10 Mobile is the official replacement for Windows Phone. The OS is meant for smaller, mobile, touch-centric devices such as smartphones and small tablets. Windows 10 Mobile will help devices leverage Continuum for phone allowing users to use their phones like a PC when connected to a bigger screen.

“As we announced earlier this year, for the first time ever, we are offering the full versions of Windows 10 Home, Windows 10 Mobile and Windows 10 Pro as a free and easy upgrade for qualifying Windows 7, Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone 8.1 devices that upgrade in the first year after launch. Once you upgrade, you have Windows 10 for free on that device,” says Microsoft in a detailed blog post. “We are making strong progress with Windows 10, and we are on track to make it available this summer. And because we have built Windows 10 to be delivered as a service, this milestone is just the beginning of the new generation of Windows. Starting this fall, customers can expect ongoing innovation and security updates for their Windows 10 devices, including more advanced security and management capabilities for businesses.”

Windows 10 Enterprise is also an important variant of the OS as it focuses on medium and large sized organizations. Customers of Windows 10 Enterprise will have access to Microsoft's Long Term Service Branch as a deployment option, and software such as Active Software Assurance etc. With Windows 10 Education, Microsoft is targeting the students as well as teachers. Build on Windows 10 Enterprise, the edition will be available through academic Volume Licensing. Microsoft is also allowing students using Windows 10 Home and Windows 10 Pro devices to upgrade to Windows 10 Education. “There will also be versions of Windows 10 Enterprise and Windows 10 Mobile Enterprise for industry devices like ATMs, retail point of sale, handheld terminals and industrial robotics and Windows 10 IoT Core for small footprint, low cost devices like gateways,” explains Microsoft in the post. There's already a lot of buzz around Microsoft's Windows 10 OS. After debacle of Windows 8, Microsoft has been making all out efforts to ensure its new OS is successful. The company has already made some significant changes in its strategy for its products that includes extensive focus on mobile, cross platform and affordable products and services. Microsoft surprised everyone with the announcement that Windows 10 is going to be the last standalone desktop OS from Microsoft. The company plans to improve the OS with “incremental updates” rather launching new OS versions. The revelation was made by Jerry Nixon, a Microsoft development executive, at the company's Ignite conference last week.
