Apple may launch an iPhone based on the design of iPhone 8 in March 2020, a media report said citing a “legal person”. Economic Daily News reports that this phone may come with a 4.7-inch display, 128GB local storage, the new A13 chip, a single-lens camera and may cost around $650 (Rs 45,000). It is expected that the company will produce 20 million handsets of this 4.7-inch iPhone and will include a Full HD LCD panel.

The iPhone 8-like design suggests that the new phone will likely have Touch ID. Apple recently refreshed its iPad Air and iPad mini, and both of them ship with the Touch ID. Previously, Apple had launched the iPhone SE to increase its market share. The phone was discontinued last year. Apple iPhone XS’ current watered-down offering, the iPhone XR, is available at a starting price of Rs 76,900.

A phone with an iPhone 8-like form factor and latest specs could further heat up the Rs 40,000-Rs 50,000 smartphone segment, especially in price-sensitive country like India, where Apple has failed to gain the traction it hoped for. Further, recent reports have claimed that the Cupertino-based company has started to assemble iPhone 7 in India, and may soon assemble the high-end models like iPhone XS. Earlier this month, a media report said Apple is working on a 4.8-inch smartphone called the iPhone XE.

Citing a source closely associated with Foxconn’s manufacturing facility in India, PC Tablet reported that the rumoured iPhone SE 2 is actually iPhone XE. However, the report noted that the iPhone XE will have an iPhone X-like edge-to-edge 4.8-inch OLED display with the notch. The notch will house the front facing camera, earpiece and all the sensors to make the Face ID work, which suggests that the phone won’t have the Touch ID. With these source-based contrary reports circulating on the internet, Digit advises it readers to take the development with a pinch of salt.

Whatever be the case, the price sensitivity of Indian customers has forced the OEM to rethink about the pricing their phone in India. With OnePlus already commanding a lion’s share in the high-end smartphone segment, Samsung’s move to bring the Galaxy S10e and reports about Google’s affordable Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL devices will surely give Indian customers a lot of options to choose from.
