Meta’s Chief Technology Officer and the head of Reality Labs, Andrew Bosworth, has called an all-hands meeting for January 14 and described it as the “most important” meeting of the year. Bosworth also strongly urged employees in Reality Labs to attend the meeting in person, reports Business Insider. This push for face-to-face attendance is unusual, as the division does not generally place such a strong focus on in-person meetings.
SurveyReality Labs is responsible for Meta’s work on wearables, virtual reality, augmented reality, and a small but growing robotics team. Some managers have reportedly told staff to “drop what they’re doing” to make sure they show up in person.
The urgency around the meeting comes at a difficult time for Reality Labs. While the group has had some wins, including the popularity of Ray-Ban smart glasses, it has also been very expensive for the company. Since 2020, Reality Labs has lost more than $70 billion, according to the report.

At the same time, Meta’s overall strategy has shifted. Last year, CEO Mark Zuckerberg moved the company’s focus more toward AI and less toward the metaverse. In 2025, Meta invested $14.3 billion in Scale AI and brought in its CEO, Alexandr Wang. The company also launched a massive hiring effort, bringing in top AI talent from rivals like OpenAI and Google DeepMind.
Over the past year, the Reality Labs division has faced several rounds of budget and staff reductions. In December, Business Insider reported that Meta was planning budget cuts of up to 30 percent and was weighing more job cuts within Reality Labs.

In a memo seen by Business Insider last year, Bosworth described 2025 as “the most critical” year of his eight-year run at Reality Labs. “This year likely determines whether this entire effort will go down as the work of visionaries or a legendary misadventure,” he wrote.
