Google has reportedly laid off employees across its Cloud division as the company continues to invest heavily in artificial intelligence. According to a report by Business Insider, the job cuts have occurred over the past two weeks and have affected several teams, including some of Google’s cybersecurity units.
SurveyOne of the teams affected is Google’s Threat Intelligence Group, a leading security division known for tracking cyber threats and publishing research on hackers and state-sponsored cyberattacks. The report, which cited people familiar with the matter, said that employees from the team even shared posts on LinkedIn about losing their jobs.
The layoffs were not limited to the Threat Intelligence Group. Other teams within Google Cloud and Mandiant, the cybersecurity company acquired by Google in 2022, were also affected by the workforce reduction.
Google has not revealed how many employees were impacted by the latest round of cuts. However, one person familiar with the matter told Business Insider that, in at least one case, the company explained the layoffs as part of an effort to shift resources toward faster-growing areas, including AI.
Responding to the report, a Google spokesperson was quoted as saying, “We regularly evaluate our internal structures to ensure we are best positioned to meet the evolving demands of our customers and the industry.”
