Google bids adieu to 2014 with top-trending searches Doodle
HIGHLIGHTS

India's Mangalyaan, FIFA World Cup and Ice bucket challenge showcased in Google's New Year Eve Doodle.

Google celebrates New Year's eve with an animated Doodle on its homepage. The Doodle uses the bright colours of the search engine’s logo and features the year’s top-trending searches.

Google's New Year Eve doodle shows five major events of 2014 including the FIFA World Cup which was held in June in Brazil and is symbolized with a bouncing ball. The animated doodle also shows the European Space Agency’s landing Philae on a comet in November and was voted the most important scientific breakthrough of 2014 by the editors of Journal Science. The Doodle also gives a shout out to India's Mars Orbiter Mission that reached the red planet’s orbit in September. India's Mangalyaan reached Mars orbit on the first attempt and that too at a much lesser cost than comparable missions.

Others included the ice bucket challenge, to raise awareness about ALS, which saw people across the world dumping ice water on themselves, posting videos on social media websites and challenging others to do the same to raise money. The doodle also shows the popular smartphone game Flappy Bird, which was pulled by its creator Dong Nguyen, in February because it was “just too addictive.”

In a note on its doodle site, Google said “Farewell, 2014! We’re celebrating the last day of the year with an animated recap of some of this year’s top trending searches, including the 2014 World Cup, the Philae robotic lander, the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, and Flappy Bird, with a shout-out to the Mars Orbiter Mission. Happy new year!”
